God sends what you need, when you need it.

I stood there completely humiliated. The young family ran away like I was some sort of stalker. All I wanted was their opinion, but they obviously thought I was trying to sell them something.

Thirty minutes before, I entered the bookstore and asked the manager if I could ask prospective readers to rate ten potential titles for my first book. The manager was reluctant since it was against corporate policy.

So I wandered out into the parking lot and started asking people who were heading for the door of the bookstore. In my mind, I had the perfect opening line, “Hi, my name is Jason, and I’m an aspiring author. Can I ask your opinion on a couple of book titles?” Translated into modern English, it sounded like, “Hi, I’m a weirdo, and I’d like to irritate you for at least twenty minutes and then get you to buy something you really don’t want.”

Then Kristina walked up. I didn’t even finish the first three words when she blurted out,

“Oh hi! How are you?”

I said, “Fine, thanks.”

“So what are you selling?” — she asked.

“I am not selling anything.” I replied.

“Oh, then why are you out here talking to everyone? Are you trying to convert people?”

“No.” I said. “I’m a writer, and I need to narrow down these ten titles to the one that’s most appropriate.”

“Oh how neat. Let’s have a look,” she said.

Of all the titles, she picked the one that is on the cover of my first book that comes out today, BREAKING THE BARRIERS. She did something more significant for me than simply rating a title, though. With her gracious attitude, she encouraged me to keep asking until I could survey all 100 people. God sends the right people at the right moment when we least expect it to encourage us to stay the course. “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed” (Deuteronomy 31:8).

Tonight, August 13, 2009 at 7:00 p.m., we will be launching the book and having a signing in the same bookstore where I chased down people in the parking lot two years earlier. And thanks to those 100 total strangers, there is a title on the cover.

God Is Opening Doors For You!

Friend, I am convinced that God will open doors for you that no one can shut. And when He does, He will expect you to walk through them. Regardless if you need a life-changing miracle or a small window of opportunity, God is willing to help, provided you’re willing to get up and move in the right direction. My only question is, “do you have the guts to walk through the door?”

I remember walking to the stage wondering if it was going to be my last time preaching in a crusade. We couldn’t raise 30% of our budget, and days after the event, we would need close to $40,000 to pay the facilities, vendors and the sound and lighting company. I felt completely helpless and overwhelmed.

The convention center was packed. Over 6,000 people had traveled many miles to experience an encounter with God. Just before I walked up the stairs, a friend grabbed my arm and said, “What an opportunity! God has opened a wonderful door to help thousands of people find hope. If He opened the door, He’ll provide a way for you to get through it.”

Sometimes when an opportunity comes our way, fear and intimidation prevent us from getting up and walking through the door. When we act in accordance with our faith, God responds.

In the days following the event, the entire amount was raised. All the vendors were paid. And 735 people found Christ for the very first time. Although I was weak and weary from the financial battle, God had the last word. Indeed, He opened the door and provided a way to help us through.

Here is a promise you can bank on: “I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name” Revelation. 3:8 (NIV).

Don’t Give Up!

“I’m sorry, Jason. I just can’t imagine anyone wanting to buy your book. It’s not saleable.” Those were the words of an acquisitions editor who sent me the letter of decline. At least he took the time to write. Most didn’t. As a matter of fact, most didn’t return my phone calls. Over twenty-four months, fourteen publishers turned down the manuscript.

In spite of every rejection, I believed God wanted it published. I felt strongly that the message was life changing. It was timely. The book had the potential to impact the lives of millions of people. Convincing a publisher of that was another thing entirely.

After I started a daily live radio program on Radio Nueva Vida, I turned the manuscript in to Faith Words, the most prestigious Christian publisher in the country. After several weeks, I received a text message from Anne Horch, the editor who agreed to take the manuscript before the publishing board. Her message was short, “Can’t talk today. Can I call you tomorrow?”

I will never forget the moment when my cell phone rang the next day at 8:45 a.m. She said, “Jason, our company would like to make you an offer. We want to buy the publishing rights to your book and the next two books. How does that sound?” In a split second, the message God laid upon my heart would make its way around the world.

Today a massive semi pulled up in front of my house delivering 2,200 copies of BREAKING THE BARRIERS in English and Spanish. My heart was overwhelmed. Indeed, they were hot off the press! After three long years of writing, editing, and marketing, it finally arrived.

God wants the dreams in your heart to be born. Don’t let discouragement detour you from the great things God has called you to do. Your greatest days are ahead! “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” Philippians 1:6 (NIV).
